It is not always the best of news. Ultimaker has released that they are not going to launch the second printhead upgrade for the Ultimaker 2.
Ultimaker came with next reasoning for this:
“It has been a hard decision, because we want to give our users a machine with utmost possibilities. Reasons not to develop the upgrade are the printresults. Our users must have an excellent experience, not compromising the printquality that we have set as a standard for the industry. Upgrading the existing configuration will give dissapointment in printresults.
First of all, when printing with one nozzle, it often occurs that the print is knocked over by the unused second nozzle. Or the second nozzle is scratching the print that much that the endresult doesn't look neat. Even our own engineers within r&d have removed the second nozzle due to bad results. We cannot support a product my own engineers don't like.
Secondly, everyone is expecting a safe, water soluble material as support. However, this is not yet present in the market as an idiot proof solution. Our Ultimaker 2 is not a DIY kit anymore, it is one of the best machines in just 'hit-and-run'. When people will try anyway, it will be a dissapointment for them with a lot of frustration of clogged nozzles.
Thirdly and last, we think the route to a dual material print is not yet as simple as it should be. This will give an overload on our support team, which we will not be able to handle at the moment.
We are working on solutions to make a dual-nozzle configuration work properly, not compromising our standard. In this development we see that there are too many changes to be made to the system, that we cannot make retrofit on the UM2 anymore. Hence the MT has decided to put all effort in working on future solutions that will work on future models.
Our sincere apologies to all whom we have made a promise. However, when we do something, we rather do it good! That is what Ultimaker stands for.
My sincere regards
